Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
