Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
